Greetings Reuse Fans,
At the Building Material Reuse Association (BMRA) conference last week Dave Bennink from Reuse Consulting, who has been involved in the reuse industry for over 25 years, and has over 1000 deconstruction projects under his tool belt, shared an interesting perspective on his work.
Deconstructing a single 2,000 square foot house diverts an individual’s lifetime -75years – of production of waste. This is based on the reference point that each American generates an average of 4.4 pounds of waste every day! If you multiply that by 75 years you get 120,450 lbs. which is about the weight of the average 2000 square foot house. So deconstruct, instead of demolish and divert a lifetime’s worth of waste!
Dave Bennink will be coming to Construction Junction to assist our Deconstruction crew and trainees to do a full deconstruction project on Wednesday (Oct 3rd) of this coming week. Look for photos and a detailed description of the project in next week’s blog.
We are still looking for houses for further pilot projects. It is challenging to find houses that are good candidates for full deconstruction. On that same Wednesday, CJ will be presenting to the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group (PCRG) to discuss funding support CJ has secured to do 3-5 full deconstruction training projects over the next 12 months. We hope members of PCRG will have some suggestions for properties we could use for training!
