Today, just a quick note from Executive Director Mike Gable with some deconstruction opportunities currently in the works:
It’s an exciting pipeline we are building. Just in the last week we have met with the Borough of Millvale, East Liberty Development, Inc., Madia Homes, Imperial Construction (salvaged material from the old Houlihans in Station Square) and Walnut Capital. All the projects have intriguing material, some suitable for older home restoration. And there are a few other projects in the pipeline that are in pre-blog stage.
Next week I am meeting with Tri-COG Land Bank to see how deconstruction and salvage can play a positive role in their work to address blight and affordable housing. TCLB is dedicated to ensuring transparency by working with members and community partners to strategically acquire blighted properties that can produce the greatest positive impact.
Obviously, the main question is can people still drop off glass for recycling? Yes. The City of Pittsburgh has not changed what they accept for recycling. Many of the questions have been asking what we accept for recycling. CJ is not a recycler, we simply provide the space in our lot, free of charge, for the city drop off area.
Also of note recently, with certain municipalities near Pittsburgh no longer accepting glass recycling, we have fielded many questions about the Pittsburgh Department Of Public Works recycling drop-off located at the top of our lot.
Also, with the upcoming CJ closure this Monday for MLK Day, please be aware that when we are closed, our lot is locked and the recycling area is not accessible. I Heart PGH also has a helpful resource with info about city recycling, including all of the drop-off locations and what is accepted at each.
Recycling is becoming an increasingly complicated area and is probably going to get more complicated. We are firm believers in reducing and reusing all that we can in order limit waste and the environmental effects of manufacturing new materials. As we begin to celebrate our 20th year in 2019, we want to help spread the word that reuse and deconstruction work can make a difference in our communities and beyond. Not just now, but for the future, as well.
