Scrap the Trap Pittsburgh is a group of local citizens trying to end the city funded practice of delivering wildlife traps to residents and picking animals up to euthanize them. This wastes approximately $100,000 of our tax payer dollars every year and kills 2,000-3,000 raccoons, groundhogs, and skunks,in Pittsburgh–not to mention the orphaned babies this also leaves behind to starve to death. Bordalo’s interest in animals, nature and environmental issues in general, in particular his stunning “trash” sculptures of everyday animals often viewed as pests, and the play on words between “Scrap” art and “Scrap the Trap” gives him an ideal profile for conveying the message of the campaign. He’s also a great fit with Pittsburgh, a city that has welcomed Street Art of all kinds in recent years and that is striving to integrate sustainability and environmental protection into its policies.
STT is partnering with nonprofit reuse retailer Construction Junction, in hosting Bordalo II ( http://www.bordaloii.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/BORDALOII/ ). Construction Junction has been a resource in Western Pennsylvania for used and surplus materials since 1999. CJ will host Bordalo’s piece at their retail and warehouse space in Point Breeze, and provide the tools and materials, sourced from their inventory of donated items from the general public, contractors, and businesses.
