Conservation and sustainability is a 24/7/365 kind of deal around here. But every year in April, that focus becomes a little sharper as Earth Day rolls around. While past years here at CJ have been a one day celebration of our planet and all that we are working to preserve, this year is going to be different. This year we are celebrating all month long!
You will notice a transformation in the front of the store this spring, and not just from a few more hours of sun shining through our dusty front windows. Earth Month will see a roll-out of an amazing line-up of all recycled content items, new this year for CJ shoppers!

- Ground Smart Rubber Mulch is produced from old tires by Liberty Tire Recycling
- Garden landscaping and fire pit glass made with a process that removes harmful lead contaminants from television and monitor glass by Close The Loop
- Peat moss alternatives that reduce paper waste from PittMoss
- A revolutionary, long lasting replacement for traditional french drains, HydroBlox. They utilize a grade of plastic that otherwise is not used in recycled consumer products.
And beyond our new product offerings, make sure to check out the full calendar of events we have going on! We have in-store appearances happening, pop-up vendors, and workshops, too. It all makes for quite the month! Head to our calendar to check out our schedule of events. If you’re the social type, you can find and share all of the events on Facebook, too. Help spread the word, just like our Executive Director, Mike Gable did this morning on Pittsburgh Today Live:

Of course, if there’s one important mantra for this Earth Day, it’s that we can always do better. We have always identified a need to supplement our retail operation with ways to capture other recyclable materials, as well. From accepting expired light bulbs and batteries for Scott Electric‘s recycling program, surplus medical supplies for Global Links, non-working freon appliances to be properly handled and disposed of by Appliance Warehouse, to providing a space in the lot for City of Pittsburgh recycling collection, expanding our impact is very important to us. This April, we think that it’s possible to do even better. You can check out more about the recycling services offered at CJ here.
Your choice to support Construction Junction through purchases and donations of reusable materials helps us to spread the message that there are things worth saving. To throw something “away” is really a misnomer. There isn’t an away. It’s still here where we live, this singular planet that we all call home. Our commitment to keeping materials out of the waste stream is a mission that is never-ending. Through your donations and salvage opportunities, we were able to divert almost a quarter of a million items from landfills last year alone. That’s about 800 tons of material each year!
